June 2005
This is my first newsletter, as I felt I wanted to share with you all
the exciting opportunities that lie ahead as well as all that I am
currently working on. Please let me know if you find this useful,
by emailing me.
The most exciting thing that has happened this year is that in March
I was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. This is such an amazing
honour and came about by being recommended by someone who believed strongly
in me. If you would like to find out more about the RSA, please visit
their website, www.rsa.org.uk.
As I write this I am feeling a sense of relief as I have just finished
a major piece of work for the next exhibition that I am taking part in. ‘NOT
WHAT IT SEAMS: Further Thoughts’ is the result of a highly productive
partnership between Bankfield Museum and the Practical Study Group, of
which I am a member. The exhibition shows both development and final
pieces resulting from research into the outstanding collection
of costume and clothing-related accessories at Bankfield. You may have
seen ‘First Thoughts’, exhibited in 2004 at the Knitting
and Stitching Shows. This part of the exhibition demonstrated the first
stages of development resulting from the research and included sketchbook
and design work. This work will now be shown alongside the larger scale
more resolved final pieces of ‘Further Thoughts. The exhibition
runs from June 18th - August 14th 2005, Bankfield Museum and Gallery,
Halifax.

With that work out of the way, I now need to focus my attention on a
City and Guilds course, Mixed Media that I am currently working on. Work
completed for this course will be on exhibition at Westhope College,
Craven Arms on Saturday 2nd July 10.00 - 6.00, and Sunday 3rd July 10.00
- 4.00. This year will feature a great many different creative subjects.
My own students will be exhibiting design work and some absolutely gorgeous
dyed and printed textiles, the result of a City and Guilds course in
Textile Decoration. It will be well worth a visit, so I hope to see you
there. You can pick up information of other courses that I offer
there. Details from 01584 861293.
Once that weekend has passed, I shall be working flat-out to complete
work for the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham this August. Some pieces
of work are already in hand, but I am looking forward to developing the
ideas I am working on for this exciting 4-day event. The exhibition ‘Drawn
Together’ is with the prestigious group ‘SIX’ and this
year we are delighted to have Charlotte Yde from Denmark as our guest
member. All the girls have been busy at it, dyeing and stitching and
the work that I have seen is absolutely gorgeous. So I had better get
my skates on!!! Incidentally if you are travelling to Europe this year
and next, look out for this exhibition as it is touring to Vienna and
Italy, with other venues in the pipeline.
Visit www.sixart.co.uk for further details as they become available.
There are lots of other exciting things to look forward to, but I shall
save those to share with you next time. Do remember to contact me.
Bye
for now.
