October 2005
Well how many of you got to the Festival of Quilts this year? What an
amazing show it turned out to be….. so much to do and see, it was
really first rate. I was particularly drawn to the work of Charlotte
Yde, who is the guest member with SIX this year. You must check out her
website to see just how fantastic her quilts are. Members of SIX are
thrilled that she is showing her work with ‘SIX drawn together’,
which previewed at the Festival of Quilts and will tour in October to
Vienna. I shall be there on the Sunday so will hopefully meet some of
you. See Future Exhibitions for
details.
I now have two further small shows to work towards. The first is at
the Oriel Gallery, Newtown, Powys, sadly not in the main exhibition hall,
but at least it is a foot in the door. The Oriel Gallery is a lovely
place to visit with a nice café and shop and I shall have few
pieces on display in this area. The second show will be in Bristol, at
The Vena Bunker Gallery. This is the first time that I will be showing
in this gallery, so I hope it will bring with it new opportunities and
those all important sales!!! Again details of these two shows appear
in Future Exhibitions.
So what else do I need to tell you? The new college year has now begun
at Westhope College This term I will be teaching two new courses, mixed
media and drawing.
The Mixed Media Course is a challenging course of six sessions, designed
to develop drawing and painting skills, through the use of a wide variety
of media, techniques and starting points. Students will work through
planned exercises and develop ideas into completed projects, but with
a personal response. The use of a sketchbook will be encouraged on this
course.
The Drawing Course is also a challenging course of six sessions, which
introduces students to working with pencil and charcoal to create tonal
drawings and to help develop student’s confidence in basic drawing
skills. Throughout the course we will be working through a series of
exercises followed by observational drawings ending with one or more
full compositions.
The two-year Design Course continues with last year's
students moving into their second year and a new intake of students now
beginning the
course. Students are either doing design as part of the City and Guilds
craft options or design on its own. Either way, students are introduced
to structured exercises, which focus on the five key design elements
and they produce portfolios of work and final assessment pieces. I
am very excited at the way this course has developed and we are seeing
some
amazing innovative results.
Unfortunately I did not have enough students enrol for the Textile
Decoration Course, so if anyone out there is looking for an exciting
two year course,
check out Laura Kemshall's website which shows examples of the work
she produced on this course with me in 2003-2005. Details at www.lindakemshall.com or
contact me for further information.
I may have seen some of you at the Mereside Centre, Shrewsbury on Saturday
24 September, where I was speaker for the Quilters Guild, Region 11 Area
Day and likewise on Saturday 1 October, at the Maria Assumpta Centre,
23 Kensington Square, London, W8, where I am speaker for the QGBI London
Region, Regional Day.
Well I must knuckle down to some work now. Look forward to hearing from
you.
Bobby
