March 2010

HELLO and HAPPY EASTER

I recently spent a great two days at the NEC in Birmingham, demonstrating a variety of paper based techniques on the ART VAN GO stand. The event was the extremely popular textile art show, Fashion, Embroidery & Stitch, which ICHF has moved to Birmingham for the very first time, joining Sewing for Pleasure and Hobbycrafts. It was a great event and I was sorry not to be able to spend all 4 days there. The good news is I am off to ART VAN GO in April teaching a two-day course on the 20th and 21st and have to say this is one of my very very favourite places to be. Its great being with Viv and Kev and I am very much looking forward to Kev cooking while Viv and I chat over a glass of wine!!!! Their website is at www.artvango.co.uk.

I shall also be visiting Chichester for the first time this May for the South East Region of the Embroiderers Guild where I shall be teaching at their Summer School 2010 ~ May 21st -23rd. This two-day summer school takes place at Earnley Concourse Nr Chichester. The course that I am offering is a very exciting one as it has very unexpected, but intriging results. "Double Image" will initially have students trying out ideas in paper, before moving on to constructing designs with bonded appliqué, then cutting and folding to produce new imagery and effects. This spontaneous method of designing is great fun to do and the results are always unexpected yet amazing. Machine work will be used to enhance the work further and take it on to a new dimension. Students will have the opportunity to produce one major piece of work or a series of smaller pieces. There will be plenty of discussion of how finished works can be taken on in personal ways. PEARL OF AFRICA CHILDRENS CHOIR

Well Easter approaches and Barney my eldest son is now home from University, while Toby my youngest prepares for two months out in Southern Uganda where he will be doing voluntary work for the Molly & Paul Childcare Foundation and The Pearl of Africa Children's Choir. To this end he completed a 180 mile walk along the Offa's Dyke to raise funds and I would so like to thank the many students, family and friends who sponsored Toby in this venture. All the money raised will be going towards funding the many projects that he will get involved in while out there. My husband Martin and I, also hope to travel out there in the Autumn with the view of setting up some creative links. Later in the year we look forward to The Pearl of Africa Children's Choir coming to England to raise further funds through their many performances. I hope some of you get a chance to see these children for yourselves. Their website is at www.pearlofafrica.org.uk.

COURSES

Well at last Spring is in the air and it is so exciting seeing how things are at long last coming together in my garden. This I have to say is all thanks to my amazing gardener Jess. Gardens and gardening are such strong attractions for so many folk and with this in mind I am delighted to be able to offer two new exciting courses which will be delivered by an excellent tutor Helen Porter. I am sure these two courses will be of interest to many garden enthusiasts and I have to say that there are only a few places still available......so do be quick if either of these courses are on your wish list.

WILLOW WORKSHOPS ~ Helen Porter

April 13th ~ Tuesday:
The Woven Willow Garden
Make your own plant supports - wigwams, fans, edging, dragonflies. You will make 2 or 3 items in the time and learn how to grow, harvest and use willow.

April 27th ~ Tuesday:
Small Willow Works
Learn how to make smaller willow items - garlic baskets, trays, door-wreaths, decorations (stars large and small, little trees) The only limit is your imagination!

£ 50 single session ~ £90 for two sessions

PAINTING WORKSHOPS ~ Paul Priestley
Paul returned to Moor Hall Studio on Thursday 25th March and all students present had a fab time learning how to use graphite to build up ideas for landscapes. Not only is he returning in April when he will be using inspiration from Monet's paintings for a two day workshop, but he will be doing a three day summer school here in August. Further details of this course to follow. All of his courses have been popular so do get in early with your bookings.

April 22/23 ~ Thursday and Friday:
Inspired by Monet
Monet was all about capturing the effects of light and the moment. We shall explore ways to quickly capture in paint the effects of light. The emphasis of this course will be on developing a bold and expressive approach to painting, so there will be no preliminary drawing we shall be straight in with the brush. If you want to free up your painting technique this is the course for you.

£ 90 for two sessions

'WORKING TOGETHER'

Courses with Bobby Britnell and Ruth Issett

This series of courses with Ruth and I has now started with the March course proving to be very successful. Ruth and I both attended each others course and learnt a great deal from the experience. These sessions are designed to stimulate and challenge students through the application of drawing, colour and design in relation to textile practice and we certainly found that this one did just that. Of the two courses coming up in May one is already fully booked, so get in quick if you were hoping to attend a Working Together Course this spring, as no more are planned now until next year. For those of you that are unaware, Ruth and I offer a unique shared way of teaching, where students benefit from the expert tuition from both tutors as students will switch tutors halfway through the course, but continue with the same body of work. Courses take place over three days, from 10.00am to 4.00pm

March 22nd, 23rd, 24th
'Drawing with and without a pencil'
Ways of looking at drawing in a wider context through using conventional and less conventional methods. A very exciting course, which has already taken place

May 7th, 8th, 9th
From Colour to Tone and from Tone to Colour'
B1 Begin exploring colour with Ruth and create powerful, subtle, & dynamic combinations using a variety of methods. These exciting results will be used to translate into large scale tonal drawings with Bobby.
B2 Spend the first half of the course with Bobby, exploring ways of creating tonal drawings using pencil and charcoal and then move on to Ruth to learn techniques in the use of bringing colour into these compositions, with both liquid and dry coloured media.
This I have to say has been my favourite of all our courses to date and really challenges students in arriving at original designs for textiles.
THERE ARE A FEW SPACES LEFT ON THIS COURSE

May 14th, 15th, 16th
'Working with Fabric, Mark and Colour'
C1 Begin with Ruth by exploring imagery using colour, dye, print and stitch onto calico and cotton organdie. Then transform these coloured cloths into a series of 2D and 3D resolved works with Bobby.
C2 Begin with Bobby by building up surface imagery and organic marks onto natural coloured fabric, using mixed media in whites, greys and black. Ruth will take these fabrics on a journey of discovery through to numerous different solutions, using colour dye and stitch.
COURSE IS NOW FULL BUT YOUR NAME CAN BE PLACED ON A WAITING LIST

£150.00 for each 3-day course
Costs include tuition, some materials and a light lunch of homemade soup and a fresh roll. Hot and cold drinks will be continually available throughout each day.
