B. TWO, THREE AND FOUR DAY WORKSHOPS

Create surfaces, by waxing, trapping and layering papers, and then go on to embellish these using a wide range of traditional hand and machine techniques. Use these to create small garments such as dresses, bibs and gloves.

On this course we will be inspired by richly textured surfaces such as old buildings, rust and corrosion, gnarled tree bark or faceted rock surfaces. Techniques will include bonding and appliqué, hand and or machine stitching and the use of an embellishing machine.

A landscape painting course in which you will look at the building blocks which underlie representational landscape painting: light, space, tone colour, perspective, composition. You will consider ways in which an expressive response to landscape might be explored. Course includes demonstrations, studio work, and sketching and drawing in the surroundings of Moor Hall. Tuition will be individual and as a group.

Kantha: Animals, Fish and Birds
26/27 June
£130 for 2 days
By folding layers of fabrics we will make a sample approximately A4 in size which will be lovely to handle. We will trace animals, fish and /or bird designs onto the top layer, and then bring these into to life using different variations of running stitch. Finally we will create quilted textures in remaining spaces.

Saturated Colour: Dye & Print

Investigate powerful colour using a variety of accessible printing techniques in combination with Procion MX dye. Learn and understand how dye can be applied in a number of ways to silk, cotton, rayon/viscose and linen and explore different printing processes to create a collection of unique fabrics.

Exploring the wonderful surroundings we will use a variety of ways to record the landscape around us. Using gathered materials in a range of techniques we will make marks that record our experience, bringing these together into tactile book forms.

An exciting course which explores mixed media approaches to design using the work of artist Ben Nicholson as the inspirational springboard. The sampling of ideas will be encouraged and documented in a sketchbook with further explorations into fabric and stitch.

Through a process of drawing and sampling we will explore both the narrative and abstract potential of hand written text, using it to develop exciting new visual ideas about form, pattern,scale, shape and structure within textiles.

Using soluble film as a stabiliser, exquisite and unique networks can be created with machine and/or hand stitching. Ideas for basic structures can be taken from jewellery, buildings or from natural objects. Tokens, talismans or amulets may be incorporated as appropriate for decoration or personal input.
