Some exhibitions often involve working with a theme or title
to inform and inspire a new body of work. These themes can be
innovative and challenging and, at the same time, provide me with
opportunities
to explore new concepts and ideas. A selection of themed works
for
specific exhibitions follow.
SIX at St Leonards
St Leonard's Church, Bridgnorth and its surroundings served as the
inspiration for this new body of work. Six at St Leonard's was the
first exhibition held by the textile group 'SIX'. Further examples
of their work can be seen on their website.
SIX in the Garden
In response to the Royal Horticultural Society, celebrating their
Bicentennary in 2004, 'SIX' decided to use the lovely theme of gardens
and flowers to create a new body of work for a touring exhibition.
Observational drawings of trees, plants and flowers served as the
starting point for this new set of work.
Material Works - Off the Wall
This exhibition, created by the Practical Study Group, drew on
items from the engineering collection at the Ironbridge Gorge Museum.
The artefacts themselves were to serve as a major part of the exhibition.
I found an immediate response to the innards of the harpsichord.
Strumming one's fingers gently across the strings creates an incredible
sound. The combination of the strong hard linear qualities of the
instrument, and the softness of the music offered contrasts which
I have pursued in this piece. By moving around 'All Strung Up' you
will see different images appear and disappear on each of the concertina'd
surfaces, similar to the movement of music.
