Well that was I believe our summer. I am sitting here wearing two poloneck jumpers as I write this newsletter!!!!! But we do have the lovely Autumn to look forward now, so chin up everyone!!!!

I must say that we did manage to spend 5 glorious days dancing in Whitby. This below is Martha Rhodens Tuppenny Dish and The Shropshire Bedlams. You will have to work out which one is me.

But what I really need to tell you is what is going to be happening soon in Moor Hall Studio, so please read on.

DIANA SPRINGALL  ~  Design made Easy

A practical session using paint and paper.

5th and 6th October

£100 for 2 days

Diana Springall is without doubt one of the best known of all British Textile Artists. Her career spans far and wide with her work in numerous collections all over the world, including the Embroiderers Guild and the Victoria and Albert Museum. She has numerous books under her belt, all of which belong on any serious textile artists bookshelf. This is the cover from her latest book, written by June Hill, curator and writer. It explores the life and work of Diana and illustrates the impact that she has had over many years as major promoter of embroidery in the Fine Art world. She is responsible for the mentoring and teaching of many of UK's greatest textiles artists including Alice Kettle. The book was launched in 2011 with an exhibition of Diana's work at the Knitting and Stitching Shows (London, Dublin and Harrogate). .

Her experience as a teacher and lecturer has taken her to the United States, Canada, Japan and China, so you can see how honoured I am that she has agreed to come here to my studio in South Shrophire to teach a two day course. This is really a course not to be missed and will be of benefit to so many of you whether a beginner or someone with experience. Knowing how to create your own original designs is of upmost importance to all studying embroidery and textiles which is why having such an expert in our midst makes this workshop 'A MUST'.

Her course will be well structured and will give students attending the two days, such a priviledged insight into her approach to 'design'.

The objectives for the course are:

  • To observe a subject with a view to extracting and recording in an individual and personal way.
  • To encourage confidence in making marks that can relate to specific embroidery techniques.
  • To gain an understanding of composition and its basic concepts.
  • Guidance on how to  proceed from the initial paper work to methods of transfer of designs according to technique.
  • Enlarging or reducing a design without a computer!

Diana's book 'Design for Embroidery' a fine art approach, first published in 1988 is still available today and as relevant now as it was then.

You can see what I mean by these few samples below.

I love this interpretation of the Rhode Island Red hens from the painting into textile piece. Diana has created a scultural surface by means of felt tubes, using the direction, width and colour of the gestural marks within the original painted study.
