A PUBLICATION
and exhibition project by the
Textile Study Group

I can now say that I have a copy of our latest new book in my hands 'Insights' and what an amazing achievement this is..........I can hardly contain my excitement. Co-incidentally Alice Fox has just phoned me, not knowing that I had just turned the first page of the book and we felt quite emotional. This was Alice's project idea and what a monumental task that has been.

It features all members work on the back and front cover and is packed full with interesting and highly readable content.

INSIGHTS is a reflection on creative practice in textile art. Through the publication and accompanying exhibition tour, the members of the Textile Study Group share their varied approaches to artistic practice: where ideas come from; how they develop and make work; where they work. All approaches are relevant, and differences are celebrated. INSIGHTS is edited by June Hill and Dr Melanie Miller, with additional essay contributions from Jane McKeating, Polly Binns, Claire Barber, Kay Greenlees and Lois Blackburn. The exhibition tour is curated by June Hill.

The Textile Study Group members' work is varied in the themes addressed and techniques employed. Methods of work include hand stitch, machine stitch, quilting, constructed textiles, pieced textiles, lace-making, mixed-media, print, dye, sketchbooks and drawing, in both two and three dimensions. INSIGHTS includes work in progress and elements of process, as well as 'finished' work.

Sadly with covid many of our plans had to change and as you will all know Festival of Quilts, where we planned to launch the book originally, was cancelled in its normal form. However the work in producing this substantial book continued to completion, and future exhibitions have now been planned.

Exhibition tour:

Mercer Gallery, Harrogate, North Yorkshire: dates tbc
Tweeddale Museum & Gallery, Peebles, Scotland, 14 Nov 2020 - 6 Feb 2021 (subject to Covid19 restrictions)
Festival of Quilts, NEC, Birmingham 29 July - 1 August 2021

The Textile Study Group:

The Textile Study Group was originally established in 1973 to promote a high standard of design in stitched textiles and the teaching of embroidery. We keep membership to a maximum of 25 experienced professional tutors, authors and exhibitors, who meet twice a year to work with an established artist and develop challenging experimental work and discussion dialogues. We also work with a mentor to have our work reviewed every 5 years, maintaining our individual standards and personal challenges.

Insights includes work by Lois Blackburn, Bobby Britnell, Jenny Bullen, Sarah Burgess, Penny Burnfield, Rosemary Campbell, Jean Draper, Janet Edmonds, Jan Evans, Alice Fox, Kay Greenlees, Gwen Hedley, Ruth Issett, Alison King, Sian Martin, Jan Miller, Sheila Mortlock, Amarjeet Nandhra, Mandy Pattullo, Shelley Rhodes, Mary Sleigh, Julia Triston, Dorothy Tucker, Ann Wheeler.

Well of course the new Textile Study Group book has really lifted our spirits this month and Alice Fox supported by her project team and all Textile Study Group members, contributors, editors and printers have done a wonderful job. I look forward to students buying their own copy from the studio over the weeks to come.

I am also excited to say that Moor Hall 1 and 2 will be returning as will Ruth Issett with Colour Investigations and all restrictions are in place to ensure a happy and creative environment.

This month I also have two courses running, a day's water-colour course with Ruth Kirkby and a two day course with Sue Brown sharing her well-established printing methods.
