Sessions will last approximately 2 hours, and the Introductory Session and Final Session will last approximately 1 hour.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Kantha is a Bangladeshi word for cloth, and a particular way of making embroidered quilts by layering and stitching together the good parts of old worn-out saris or recycled fabrics.

Going with the Flow will focus on the ways in which freely worked lines of running stitch create the lovely rippling surfaces unique to kantha.

We will need a plan, an idea or a feeling to get us started. The movement of water over pebbles or around stones comes to mind, fish amongst seaweed or the lift and fall of leaves in a breeze, perhaps a favourite piece of music, following a snail trail or a network of footpaths or the flow of traffic or tracing patterns found on shells.

Undertaking some practical work in response to the introduction and all  four workshops, taking and sending Dorothy and Bobby images of work in progress by email as jpegs, giving and receiving feedback based on these images with the group, are all essential to the success of the course.

DOROTHY TUCKER

Dorothy Tucker works from her home in North Norfolk.  She is a member of the Textile Study Group, exhibits her own work, and tutor’s textile workshops in the UK and abroad.                                          Born in India, Dorothy’s choice to stitch by hand is informed by her research into kantha, a form of embroidered quilt traditionally made in what used to be Bengal.  In January/February 2020 she travelled in search of kantha to West Bengal and Odisha on a group trip arranged by Discover India through Textiles.
