Course description

You will use the technique of batik (hot wax resist) using Jenny’s contemporary approach, and other resists such as oil pastels, cold wax and stencils to create lots of samples and pieces of work inspired by trees. Working on different surfaces such as tissue and found papers and fabric.  You will work with waxes, bleach and inks to create fabulous textures and effects, exploring markmaking with traditional and non traditional tools inspired by our observations of trees. The layering of wax, inks, and bleach on tissue, papers, and fabric will each give different effects. We will also look at the work of artists such as David Hockney and Vincent Van Gogh and their use of colour, mark making and texture and use it for inspiration. An exciting course allowing for exploration and discovery. The work will be suitable for further development in many different ways such as adding stitch.

Materials for Students to Bring:

An apron, hairdryer, Pritt type glue stick, gloves, scissors, backing paper such as Khadi paper, watercolour paper, etc. two pieces of  white or light cotton fabric, this can be pre used or vintage, max A3 in size, newspaper if you have any for removing the wax, images of trees for inspiration, tree images from the artists mentioned ( Jenny will have plenty of examples too) Inktense pencils if you have them, (optional)
